TIMSS-Related Sites:
  • Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)
    This is the official web site for this large test, which was administered in 1997 to 4th and 8th grade students as well as those in their final year of secondary school (12th grade in the U.S.) in 21 countries. The site includes lists scores, offers analysis, and provides forums for online discussions about TIMSS.

  • U.S. TIMSS National Research Center
    This center, based at Michigan State University, publishes studies of TIMMS, including "A Splintered Vision: An Investigation of U.S. Science and Mathematics Education."

  • SciMathMN
    A nonprofit reform organization that sponsored Minnesota's participation in TIMMS.

Organizations/Programs

  • Project 2061
    The American Association for Advancement of Science's program for revamping K-12 science education.

  • SRI International's Center for Education and Human Resources
    Provides evaluations of Project 2061 (see above) and the National Science Foundation's Statewide Systemic Initiatives (SSI) Program.

  • The National Science Resources Center
    The NSRC is operated by the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and the Smithsonian Institution to improve the teaching of science in the nation's schools.

  • Partnerships Advancing the Learning of Math, Science, and Technology (PALMS)
    Massachusetts Statewide Systemic Initiative, PALMS is a cooperative initiative of the Massachusetts Department of Education and the National Science Foundation.

  • Resources for Involving Scientists in Education (RISE)
    Established in 1989 by the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council, RISE conducts workshops and publishes materials to help scientists and engineers play effective roles in improving science education. Publications:
    • National Science Education Standards
      Developed by a national committee of school teachers, university and college faculty, scientists, and state and local school administrators, this is one of the nation's first comprehensive standards to improve science education in grades K-12.
