With budget cuts and layoffs from coast to coast, many public schools are turning to private donations to make up the shortfalls. Parents who are concerned that their schools won't have enough resources to prepare students for tough new accountability tests are raising funds to pay teacher aides, tutors, and reading specialists and to fund enrichment programs in subjects such as art or science. Sounds like a good idea. But is it?
